Saint Edward Brotherhood Bookbindery
The bindery at Saint Edward’s is staffed solely by the monastics and serves not only the needs of the monastery library (journal binding and book restoration) but also binds and restores books for a variety of private customers, churches and other institutions. As well as building on the experience of our fellow monastic binders in this country who have been binding books to the highest standard for over fifty years we endeavour to keep abreast of advances in the field of bookbinding and conservation in order to use more recently developed techniques where appropriate.
Most of our work involves the restoration of 18-20th century cloth and leather bindings. The overall cost of the binding depends largely on the original condition of the book and also on the cost of materials. Prices start at £15 for cloth restorations and £30 for leather restorations. Books that need rebinding are normally bound with a goatskin spine and cloth sides. Prices for these ‘Quarter Leather’ bindings start at £40. Half leather and full leather bindings are available. All the above prices exclude the cost of postage.
The easiest method of obtaining an estimate is to make an appointment to visit us at the address below and we can then look at the book first hand. Alternatively, we can discuss the book over the phone or by e-mail. One or two photographs of the book are often useful in determining the length of time it will take to restore it.
